APRS Information

Because the Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) is becoming an intergrated part of EOC operations, we have installed an APRS digipeater at the central tower site. The core of system consists of an Icom IC-V8000 2 Meter mobile radio and a Kantronics KPC-3+ TNC. The radio feeds an antenna which is located at the 180' level on the tower

Additionally, the TNC is connected to a 56K microwave serial link to the EOC which will allow will allow us to run an APRS to Internet Gateway.

IMPORTANT APRS INFO

If you have not already done so, please update your APRS path settings to either:
  • WIDE2-2 (fixed and mobile stations)
  • WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 (mobiles in rural areas)
  • WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 (mobiles in remote areas 3 or more hops from a large city)
  • Around South Central MN (Waseca, Faribault, Mankato, Albert Lea, Owatonna, Le Sueur), use WIDE2-2 or WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 and you will be heard by one or more DIGI's.

These generic APRS callsigns have been deprecated: RELAY, WIDE, TRACE, TRACEn-N and will not be forwarded by digipeaters. That means there is a very good posibility that no body will hear or see you unless they copy your packet directly.

More information can be found at Bob Bruniga's, WB4APR APRS Site
